SS Great Britain was by far the largest deep sea vessel afloat when she was launched, and she was the first steel ship fitted with propellors and the first propellor driven ship to cross the North Atlantic in 1845. After a couple of years she changed owners and was employed for the next thirty years on the route to Australia. In 1882, she was converted to a sailing ship, transporting coal. After four years she was hit by a fire and was used as a coal bunker at the Falkland Islands. When this ended she was scuttled and sank in a bay nearby in 1937. There she was found in 1970, placed on a pontoon and taken back to her native country England where she was restored and is now in use as a museum in Bristol.
