Tillberg Design of Sweden: Shaping the Seas with Scandinavian Elegance
Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS) is a globally recognized design studio that has indelibly influenced passenger ship design, particularly in the realm of cruise ship and luxury yacht interiors. With a history stretching back over 60 years, the company has grown from a visionary Swedish practice into a leading international naval architecture and interior design studio, synonymous with innovation, timeless Scandinavian elegance, and functional design on the high seas.
Founded in 1964 by Robert Tillberg, the company introduced modern maritime design, setting a new standard for onboard experiences with its first landmark project, the ocean liner Kungsholm. Starting with ferries, liners and cruiseships, today TDos also designs cruise yachts, a new way of cruising combining luxury with intimacy.

World-renowned design firm Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS) has recently established its new mother company, Viken Group, to provide a full range of comprehensive design, naval architecture and project management services to the cruise line and yachting industries. The newly formed conglomerate will comprise multiple brands, where TDoS will remain as today, while recently acquired Italian design and naval architecture firm Thalia Marine will establish expertise in multiple areas of technical project management, surveys and consultancy. Based in Trieste, Italy, Thalia Marine counts among its clients Carnival Cruise Line, Silversea, Swan Hellenic, Virgin Voyages, Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI, member of CSSC, China State Shipbuilding Co.) and Fincantieri, and is a trusted party in newbuilding and refurbishment of both yachts and cruise ships.
Together, both companies will be able to provide their clients services including naval architecture design, quantity surveying, technical consultancy, surveys, on-site inspections and also interior design and space planning as well as financial management and administration support.
The Viken Group now consists of the TdOS headquarters in Höganäs, Sweden (also home to one of the industry’s largest material libraries), a designer office in Wroclaw, Poland, two strategic hubs in Miami, USA and Singapore, the offices of Thalia Marine in Trieste, Italy and those of Hot Lab, a yacht design studio which is also a part of the Viken Group situated in Milan, Italy.
Today, TDoS is at the forefront of the emerging “cruise yacht” segment, blending intimate luxury and sophistication of super yachts. Notable recent projects the company worked on include the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s Evrima and the new luxury yacht cruiser Four Seasons I.
This 207m (679ft) all-suite yacht is the first of a planned fleet for the well-known global luxury hospitality brand, which intends to offer both exceptional land and sea travel experiences. Together, Four Seasons, TDoS, exclusive travel experts FS YachtCo, luxury lifestyle expert and publisher Prosper Assouline and ship builder Fincancieri, will create a cruise yacht for the ultra wealthy community of travelers. Four Seasons I will feature 14 decks with vast indoor and outdoor private guest areas offering nearly 50 percent more living space per guest than any competing vessel. Guests will be accommodated in 95 expansive and multi-level guest suites with adjoining options that allow for adaptable, villa-like residences. Each custom suite will cost $4mio to build and will feature floor-to-ceiling windows and expansive terraces. The most spacious Funnel Suite will span four decks and measure 431 square meters (4,639 square feet) and will offer a 462sqm (4,973sqft) terrace with a private pool. Also, the 4 storey window will be the most expensive one on the seven seas, costing $4.2 mio. Guests will have to pay $330,000 per week.
The story of TDoS began in 1964 with its founder, Robert Tillberg. His pioneering work on the ocean cruise liner Kungsholm was a seminal moment, her interiors showing a both elegant and functional Scandinavian style. This design philosophy still plays an important role in modern cruise ship architecture. Robert Tillberg’s focus on the combination of function and design remains one of the company’s pillars today.
A testament to this pioneering spirit is TDoS’s history of introducing groundbreaking features. Already mentioned, one of the most famous early innovations was the design for the very first atrium on a cruise ship aboard the Sea Venture in 1971. This concept revolutionized passenger flow and the onboard passenger experience, creating a central, open lay-out multi-deck gathering space and focal point that is now an indispensable part of modern cruise ship design. TDoS continues to deliver bold, transformative designs, demonstrated by later iconic projects like the beautifully appointed, three-level restaurant on the Freedom of the Seas (2006) and the grand scale of the last true ocean liner Queen Mary 2 (2003), which was, at the time, the longest ,largest and most expensive passenger ship in the world. They are even involved in the design of Titanic II, a replica of the infamous Titanic of 1912, a project of Australian business tycoon Clive Palmer.
TDoS’s design approach is deeply rooted in its Swedish heritage, emphasizing clarity, balance, and fine craftsmanship and is based on three key principles:
Functionality: the design must first and foremost be functional,
Timelessness: The goal is to create “future-proof” designs that remain relevant and appealing throughout the vessel’s multi-decade lifespan, surviving passing trends,
The Guest Experience: Designs are guest-centered and often draw inspiration from the best of land-based-based hospitality sector e.g. luxury hotels and resorts, creating an environment of comfort and sophistication of a 4- or 5-star experience at sea.
Their process, described by TDoS designers as project-phases Envision, Shape, and Create, is of course meticulously tailored to each client’s unique vision, ensuring the final product perfectly matches their specific requirements list.
Therefore, Tillberg Design of Sweden has established specialized studios where one team creates public spaces, while the other designs cabins and suites only. In this way, furnishing, materials, graphics, exteriors and modernizations have their own dedicated design units. Designing an entire interior for a cruise ship is incredibly complex as for example one space alone can easily contain fifty materials.
Building Information Modeling, BIM, originally designed to improve efficiency of construction projects on land was picked up by TDos over two decades ago and is now used as the basis of their own planning process. In addition to this technical planning instrument, tools like Archicad make it possible for every project to be 3D-modeled. When, after the original idea has transformed into a mood board and sketches, Archicad makes it possible to visualize the definitive designs to the client, usually to 1:20 / 1:50 scale. The shipyard delivers the technical drawings, not much more than a specification of decks and bulkheads which Tillberg Design of Sweden brings alive with their designs, filling up the ship’s public spaces.
While TDoS has long been a major player in the large cruise ship segment, recent years have seen a significant expansion into the luxury market, particularly the emerging segment of the cruise yacht.
Example hereof where TDoS is involved include the aforementioned Four Seasons yacht as lead architect for the master planning and interior concepts, and Evrima (The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection) where TDoS was instrumental in translating the luxury hotel brand’s residential-style into a seaborne experience, creating an intimate vessel that feels more like a private yacht than a traditional large and more crowded cruise ship.
